FRANK STAPLES

Frank Staples became one of New England’s most respected watercolorists. A graduate of the Massachusetts College of Art, he studied under Royal Bailey Farnum before launching a career that blended painting with teaching and the development of art programs at colleges across the country.

In the 1950s, Staples worked with the U.S. Air Force and the National Recreation Association, traveling internationally to lecture and teach painting to servicemen. He authored six books, including Watercolor Painting Is Fun (1948), inspiring countless newcomers to explore the medium.

Staples later made his home in Fortune Rocks, Maine, where he spent his final years painting the region’s landscapes and fishing for lobster. His legacy endures as both an artist and educator, celebrating the expressive beauty of the American landscape.

We are honored to keep his vision alive. Welcome to the world as Frank Staples saw it: raw, radiant, and forever true.
